Guangxi University Transgenic Animal Technology Makes New Breakthrough in Rabbits

A few days ago, I learned from the School of Animal Science and Technology of Guangxi University that the institute has made continuous breakthroughs in the research of cloned rabbits. Following the birth of the world's first batch of microfertilization-transformed fat-1 gene rabbits on December 12, last year, two transgenic cloned rabbits were born on January 14 this year. Recently, these two batches of experimental rabbits passed the identification of genetically modified components. This is Guangxi University's new breakthrough in transgenic animal technology in rabbits following the successful transgenic cloning of buffalo.

It is understood that the research on genetically modified rabbits of Guangxi University is the subject of the “cultivation of new breeds of genetically modified rabbits” of the National 863 Project. Two years ago, the animal germplasm innovation team of the College of Animal Science and Technology of Guangxi University undertook the project. After more than two years of exploration, the team has overcome a series of technical problems such as low integration rate of exogenous genes prepared by micro-fertilization to prepare transgenic rabbits and low pregnancy rate of transgenic cloned embryo transfer, and gradually established a complete technical system of transgenic rabbits.

According to Dr. Liu Qingyou, the backbone of the team's research, the content of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in transgenic rabbits is about 3 times higher than that of ordinary rabbits. Omega-3 contains the two most important unsaturated fatty acids for the human body, one has the function of cleaning up the garbage in the blood vessels (cholesterol and triglycerides), commonly known as "vascular scavenger"; the other has the effect of softening blood vessels and strengthening the brain The effect of wisdom and vision improvement can greatly promote the healthy development of the brain and nervous system of infants and young children, commonly known as "brain gold".

Researcher Lu Fenghua, the backbone of the team, told reporters that after the successful experiment of the micro-fertilization transgene technology in rabbits, the technology will be used for transgenic breeding of other larger livestock, providing technical support for the breeding of other livestock transgenic varieties. Through this technology, humans can genetically modify animals, so that some of their excellent economic characteristics can be oriented toward human needs. These technologies will lay a technical foundation for China's major special project "cultivation of new varieties of genetically modified organisms".
