EU leather furniture new standard introduced this year or will be implemented

Since 2012, cars sold in the EU region can only be called leather interiors when only 80% of the materials in the interior are leather.

The new EU “standards” (not “laws”) will be implemented in 2012. In addition to automotive leather, the standard also covers sofas, furniture and other interior leathers. This new standard refers to many of the footwear standards previously adopted by the European Union and has been negotiated by the European Tanning Federation (Cotance) and the European tanning industry, including the chemical industry.

The new standard stipulates that for OEMs and furniture manufacturers, only when more than 80% of the surface material of their products is leather, they can be called leather products. When using PU refinished leather and split leather in automobiles and furniture, according to the new standard, manufacturers need to mark it as “recycled leather” in the product label.
