IMD technology will design three kinds of materials: film, ink, and plastic particles. We will discuss the requirements of IMD for these materials one by one.
film
There are several types of films currently in use:
1. PC film: the most important IMD film material
Features:
· High heat resistance, glass transition temperature Tg140C
· Good tensile properties. The extensibility of PC is very good, the elongation rate can reach 160%
· Good processing performance. Because it is an amorphous material, the range of forming temperature is very large, so the temperature range of film forming is very wide, from cold forming to hot forming 170C; the forming temperature here refers to the temperature of the film;
· Wide range of products. There are different types of matte, fine sand, hardened, anti-fog, etc. on the surface;
· Hardness up to 1H. The reason why everyone did not like the PC film was that the surface of the PC plus hardened film could not reach 1H. At present, GE has a new DMX film surface that can reach 1H, and the tensile properties are very good, which solves the previous tensile properties and surface. Contradictory problems of hardening · At present, the most commonly used products of customers are GE's OQ series hardened films, the latest ultra-hard formable film DMX
· The current application areas are very wide: mobile phones, automobiles, consumer electronics, etc.
2. PET film:
Features · High surface hardness. PET film can reach 2H after hardening;
· Good chemical resistance.
· Poor formability. There is no way to make large stretched parts with PET film, only flat or simple curved products.
· Large deformation after molding. PET is a crystalline material. There is no so-called glass transition temperature. It is either solid or like flowing water. Therefore, thermoforming can only be in solid state, so PET molding can only be forced molding. The result is that the PET film rebounds very much after molding, resulting in very serious deformation after the product is finished. All manufacturers of PET film processing IMD parts currently encounter this problem. But this problem is insurmountable in terms of the material itself;
· The current application areas are mainly in home appliances and mobile phone lenses. For example, the control panel of the air-conditioning rice cooker, the lens of the mobile phone is flat, so it can also be made of a film.
3. ABS film
Features · ABS film is mainly used in automotive interior parts. Some professional film factories print walnut or metal texture film on ABS film, plus a hardened layer. The manufacturer is represented by American Avery Avery. [next]
Ink
Because IMD technology has its particularity, it has specific requirements for ink:
· Temperature resistance. Because the process of IMD is injection molding after printing, the ink must be resistant to more than 200C, otherwise it will be washed away by the injection molding flow;
· Extensibility. There is thermoforming prior to injection molding, and the ink is of course stretched along with the film. If the ink does not have ductility, the ink may leak light and crack after thermoforming.
At present, there are many manufacturers claiming to be able to provide IMD inks on the market, but there are not many that are really easy to use. At first glance, there seem to be two people:
· UV type has Sunchemical Decomold series;
· Solvent type is Proell's N2K and HTR series;
We all know that the drying time of solvent-based ink is much slower than that of UV type, and it requires a long drying tunnel or oven, while UV type does not. From the perspective of productivity, the UV type is better.
Plastic particles
The choice of plastic particles mainly depends on the requirements of OEM manufacturers on the performance of parts. At present, PC, PC alloy, ABS and PMMA are used. The advantage of PC is good impact resistance, and most PCs in automobiles and mobile phones. PMMA has a relatively low injection temperature, high transmittance and surface hardness, so it is used more in some lens products.
It is worth mentioning that the current technology of PC alloys is progressing rapidly. Some PC alloys retain the strength of PC and reduce the injection temperature to improve the fluidity.
