A joint venture between DRIPS (Drip Research Technology Services) of San Diego and Cincinnati Extrusion GmbH of Vienna, Austria, developed a special extrusion processing system that can directly manufacture drip irrigation pipes without the need for injection molding. DRTS is a manufacturer of sales drip irrigation pipe maker Cincinnati Extrusion was originally Milacron's extrusion plant in Europe and now belongs to German SMS Plastics Technology.
Using this special processing system, a thin embossing tape is extruded and then embedded in a crosshead die to make a droplet irrigation tube. The drip irrigation pipe and the embossing belt are made of high density polyethylene material. The embossed pattern of the ribbon can be zigzag or labyrinth, so that the amount of water can be precisely controlled. The embossing was done on a water-cooled rotor with a diameter of 1 m. The runners carried active panels to control the different water discharge rates. After embossing, the continuous thin strip is 0.2-0.4 mm thick and 4-5 mm wide, and it can be welded into a drip tube by using the waste heat from extrusion. The preparation of the drip tube was "fully extruded" and was completed after embedding in the crosshead die. It can replace those "droppers" made by injection molding.
In this processing system, Cincinnati can provide the necessary extruders, as well as downstream refrigeration equipment and blower equipment. DRTS provides the required molds, embossing wheels and drills. This system can be listed in the United States as early as next year.
