Paper industry proposes the research direction of "Agenda 2020"

(Paper Industry Sets Out Research Priorities in Agenda 2020)

As one of the major energy-intensive industries, the Department of Energy of the Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT) proposed a joint investigation of the paper and pulp industry to cooperate with OIT's "Industrial of the Future." (Future) plan, they recently developed a research proposal for the industry.

Through this program, OIT fosters and encourages various industries to participate in long-term investigation and research, and provides them with some fees. This research proposal, known as "Agenda 2020," will make the forest and paper industry more concrete. In 2020, the forest and paper industry will be one of the top ten industries in the United States.

The following six industry-leading research projects have achieved priority research for Agenda 2020:

Sustainable Forest Management (Affordable Forest Management)
Environmental Performance
Energy Performance
Improved Capital Effectiveness
Recycling (recycling)
Sensors and Control (Sensors and Controllers)

These six areas have a significant impact on the graphic and communications industry. "Affordable forest management" can increase the biomass productivity of cellulose plantation and thus become a factor in controlling the price of the fiber. The main goal of "environmental performance" is to further comply with the Environmental Protection Agency Cluster Rule and increase the release control of gas phase and liquid phase materials. The study of gasification treatment has become the main activity in the field of environmental performance.

"Improved utilization of funds" will promote research into the core technologies of the pulp and paper industry. The goal is to pursue an original, capital-intensive manufacturing process that replaces traditional methods that have been used for nearly a century. Research on “recycling and recycling” has achieved considerable success, and the printing industry has fully participated in this activity.

Research projects that have the most direct impact on the graphic communications industry may have to consider "sensors and controllers." Computer-based distributed control systems have evolved and the number of sophisticated sensors has continued to increase. These will translate into more control over paper manufacturers, and paper products shipped to print shops will be even more singular.

The organizations surveyed in these six fields include: The Institute of Paper Science and Technology (Georgia Institute of Technology), the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the group of nine universities that the Pulp and Paper Education and Research Alliance (Pulp and Paper Education and Research Alliance, PPERA). The members of PPERA Association are Auburn University, Miami (of Ohio) University (University of Miami, Ohio), North Carolina State University (North Carolina State University), the State University of New York at Syracuse (State University of New York), the University. Of Maine (University of Maine), the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point (University of Wisconsin), the University of Washington (University of Washington), the University of Minnesota at St. Paul (University of Minnesota), and Western Michigan University ( Western Michigan University). PPERA represents the core of the academic research component that supports the Agenda 2020 program. The American Forest and Paper Association will promote joint activities among various cooperative groups. The GATF Society of Fellows Visiting Scientist program is also often associated with the main members of Agenda 2020, which has involved many university students in the survey activities.
