Introduction: When our ancestors learned to drill wood for fire, that is, when humans ended their hair and blood, the fire improved people's diet and improved people's quality of life. With the advancement of human civilization, our understanding of fire has become more and more thorough, and fire is produced by the burning of matter. There must be three essential conditions for the combustion of the substance: combustibles, oxygen (oxidizer), temperature (fire point). When the oxygen in the air is below a certain concentration, the combustible material will not burn. For the combustion that has already been carried out, if one of the conditions is eliminated, the combustion will terminate and the flame will be extinguished, which is the basic principle of fire extinguishing.
This experiment: The DrDAQ oxygen sensor is used to monitor the oxygen level required to keep the candle burning, and to analyze the minimum oxygen concentration that sustains the candle burning.
Warning - This experiment requires the use of adult supervision.
Equipment required: PC, DrDAQ recorder, oxygen sensor, temperature sensor, a bowl of water, glass jar, darkroom (for light sensors).
Device settings:
1. Connect the DrDAQ data logger to the parallel port (or the usb interface).
2. Connect the oxygen and temperature sensor to the top of the glass jar. Keep all sensor wires at a safe distance from the candle.
3. Connect the oxygen sensor and temperature sensor to DrDAQ1 and 2.
4. The configuration software samples 250 samples every 250 milliseconds.
conduct experiment:
1. Place the sensor on the glass bottle and install the sensor on the water bowl. (As shown below)
2. Fix the DrDAQ light sensor on the glass jar.
3. Start recording the software.
4. Light the candle and once the candle is extinguished, the experiment ends.
problem:
Why do you start recording and re-igniting the candle?
Does the flame produce two by-products?
When does the candle go out?
How does the chart show that the candle uses oxygen?
What oxygen levels are needed to keep the candle burning?
