A U.S. institute has recently developed a biodegradable plastic film made from potatoes and whey. Its greatest advantage is that it can be decomposed into lactic acid that is harmless to the environment. According to reports, this plastic film is produced by converting potatoes that have been discarded after whey formation at the time of making cheese into acid with glucose, and then forming a lactic acid-containing liquid by bacterial fermentation. The lactic acid in the liquid is separated by electrodialysis and heated to evaporate the water, leaving behind the polylactic acid molecules that can be made into films and coatings. After being made into plastic film, it can be used as packaging materials such as fresh-keeping bags.
