The Green Age of Plates: The Secret of New Chemical-free Plates (2)

Fuji's Ecomaxx-V (also known as Brillia HD PRO-V) is a chemical-free processing plate specially developed for users of the violet laser CTP. Although it has already made its debut at Drupa 2008, this product has undergone rigorous site testing before it officially enters the commercial and newspaper printing market. Like the Ecomaxx-T plate, it also uses Fujifilm's original MultiGrain technology, but unlike the thermal plate, it only has to pass a preheating unit to complete all the removals. Glue work. The commercial version of the Ecomaxx-V plate can achieve approximately 150,000 impressions of India, while the newspaper version of the Comaxx-V plate can print up to 200,000 impressions.

While simplifying the production process, on-machine development technology will also face certain challenges. Before the printing plate really started printing on the machine, we couldn't see the latent image it produced, so it was also difficult to measure the tone value of the dot. Although the imaging process of the imaging plate itself is a thermal process, the current on-press plate is still sensitive to sunlight, so try to avoid exposing the plate to the lighting of the press room for a long time.

For example, Kodak warned that exposed Thermal Direct plates should not be exposed to white (no more than 1 hour) or yellow (no more than 4 hours) lights for extended periods before being printed on the machine.

Presstek's new Aurora Pro process-free plates only need to be rinsed with water before printing on the machine. Royce Feldman, the Prepress director of Clear Copy, who is also the user of this product, said: “As long as we use an aqueous developer, we can remove the emulsifier on this plate, and we wash it on average every two months. A developing machine, which fully reflects the advantages of this type of water-washed printing plate compared with other on-press printing plates. According to Presstek's estimate, the monthly water consumption of this product is only 20 to 30 gallons.

Unlike previous smooth plates, the Aurora Pro plate incorporates Presstek's new Pro grain structure, which adds a new ink-receptive coating to the microporous hydrophilic coating. As long as the non-ablative thermal laser is irradiated in the non-image area of the plate, its water-soluble emulsifier can be removed. This high-sensitivity non-ablative thermal plate can be imaged on most 830-nm thermal CTP devices, and its print resistance can reach 25,000 prints.

Feldman said: “When we switched from traditional film workflows to CTP workflows, we were particularly worried about the problem of using chemicals on printing presses and how to keep the ink balance between new printing plates. But it turns out that everything is fine. Our previous concerns are redundant."

After its debut at Drupa 2008, Presstek also upgraded its small format chemical-free processing product line. Freedom Pro is a split metal plate that can be used with Presstek's Vector FL52 CTP system. The Anthem Pro and PearlDry free waterless plates are among the best.

Following a global record of 2,000 installations, Agfa has renewed its product line with a new, Azura TS chemical-free process plate, which is capable of full speed on most platesetters. Production, and can reach 100,000 India's resistance to India. Because of the use of Agfa's ThermoFuse rubber emulsifier technology, these new printing plates need to be processed by a degumming processor before installation.

The process of chemical-free plate making can bring great advantages to small-scale printing companies, especially those located in environmentally-sensitive areas. Scott Morton, a partner at La Plume Printing Company, explained: “Our company still needs to report to the EPA (State Environmental Protection Agency) now, but since we have adopted a chemical-free CTP, we don’t have to report back to them about their silver pollution. With the help of the Azura processor, the only thing we need to do is input air and electricity, and then change the glue regularly. This is a very environmentally friendly product."

Another product released by Agfa at Drupa is the Azura V violet laser resin chemical-free processing plate. It is like the N92-V chemical-free violet laser printing plate, and treats the newspaper market as Breakthrough. : Azura V does not currently start selling in the South American market, but only conducts field tests in several newspaper printers. In addition, Agfa's eco-friendly printing products include ThermoFuse plates, Amigo plates and ThermoLite Plus plates for direct imaging printers.

Heidelberg's Saphira chemical-free thermal plate uses a thermal coalescing emulsifier that fuses with the plate during exposure. This plate only needs to be cleaned with mild detergent before printing on the machine. That's it.

Don Rogers, Heidelberg consumables product manager, said: "When the plates are exported, you get a traditionally glued plate that does not require yellow safety lights and has a long shelf life."

According to Rogers, Heidelberg is currently developing two new products to be released in the first quarter of 2009. He said: “One of these is the new generation of Saphira chemical-free thermal plates, which can achieve higher output speeds on the Suprasetters platesetter. Another is Saphira chemical-free processing designed specifically for our Prosetter line. Purple laser printing plate."

Southern Lithoplate also stated that it is developing new process-free plates for thermal and violet laser platesetters, but they did not announce the specific time of product release.

At drupa, Mitsubishi also announced plans to introduce two chemical-free plates. The first product to be launched soon is the Thermal Digiplate, a chemical-free flexo plate suitable for printing on paper. In addition to the Mitsubishi patented technology, it also employs a thermal fusion imaging process that not only completely dries but does not generate any chemical waste. This product is expected to meet with a large audience at the National Press Exhibition held in October this year. Thermal Digiplate can be used with low-cost platesetters with a resolution of 1200-dpi and can produce up to 60 plates of 18.1 x 20.8 inches per hour.

Mitsubishi's Polymer Digiplate will also be exhibited at the National Graphic Arts Station and will be officially released in 2009. This product adds a high-resolution photosensitive resin emulsifier on the polyester plate that does not require chemical treatment, making it particularly suitable for color printing. Polymer Digiplate can image under a variety of light sources including violet lasers, and it can be developed only by rinsing with water.

Xanté has introduced an Aspen eco-friendly printing plate specially designed for the small format market. The product is produced at Xanté's factory in Asia and can be imaged on the Xanté Impressia platesetter. It uses a chemical electrolytic polishing and anodized plate that can be recycled after use. In addition, this plate not only achieves a resolution of 175 lines per inch on the Impressia platesetter, but also achieves 25,000 impressions of imprint resistance.

Arthur Verwey, Xanté’s vice president of global marketing, said: “The range of applications for Impressias platesetters and Aspen plates is very wide, and they can be used by users from quick printing shops to offices to schools. Aspen plates do not require any use. Chemicals, so you can put it on your desk as long as you like."

Verwey believes that these chemical-free processing plates are ideally suited for small format or GTO printers because people do not need to replace fountain solution or other chemicals for this purpose. He said: "We have a lot of customers who are using this kind of printing plate for printing security inks, and it has no restrictions on the types of jobs."

Print service providers who have not yet used chemical-free or plate-free printing plates can also improve their environmental protection through other means. A user at Agfa has found a chemical with a long life that can reduce the chemical consumption of each plate by more than 80%. In addition, Kodak's new Electra XD thermal plate not only eliminates preheating, but also reduces developer consumption for the plate process, reducing the environmental impact of the entire plate process.
