Nanda enters new environmental materials and renewable energy

A new type of environmental materials and renewable energy research conducted in China first settled in Nanjing University, and has produced important staged research results under the support and input of the school.
Professor Zou Zhigang, professor of Nanjing University and director of the Research Center for Environmental Materials and Renewable Energy, made a demonstration to the author: Place two dark glass plates that are stuck together under a 60-watt table lamp, turn on the lamps, and connect the glass plates. A simple small fan connected by wires. In less than a second, the blades of the fan turned up. When the lights turned off, the fan stopped turning. This is amazing? The mystery is all in the nano-photocatalytic material coated on the glass sheet.
Prof. Zou told the author that the four hot research areas in the world today are information, biology, environment and energy. Energy issues have become the key to the survival and sustainable development of human society. According to statistics, the current level of oil reserves in the world is not sufficient to maintain 100 years of consumption. Moreover, fossil fuels such as oil are more shocking to the atmosphere and to the environment. Dedicated to reducing the environmental burden on the earth, research on renewable energy and environmental materials that can be recycled has become one of the important directions for high-tech research in the world today, and NTU will also strive to occupy a leading position in this field.
For the first time, Professor Zou’s research group successfully developed a visible light-responsive water-decomposition photocatalyst in the world. This research result was published in the world’s top academic magazine “Nature” in December 2001, in the international academia and industry. It has a great response.
In 2003, Zou Zhigang and others conducted research on the development of new environmental materials and energy at Nanda, and for the first time realized the experiments of photocatalytic water decomposing of hydrogen under outdoor sunlight, which confirmed the conclusions reached in the laboratory. . In July, the research results of the “Visible Light-Responsive Water Full Decomposition Photocatalyst” developed by Zou Zhigang of Nanjing University applied for patents both in Japan and in China. At present, research results on environmental materials and renewable energy sources are applying for the second patent in China. According to reports, if the conversion rate of solar energy to hydrogen energy reaches 3%, humans can produce hydrogen gas more economically, such as hydrogen fuel cells. By 2030, this photocatalytic water-decomposition hydrogen production technology is expected to be applied on a large scale.
