Industrial design is a great undertaking that affects the development of the country, nation, society and enterprise. The history of the 20th century tells us that the developed countries are inevitably developed; if developing countries want to rise, they must also rise in design. Industrial design is the creator of life. Who drives it, who will be brought into a rich, well-developed and beautiful future; who ignores it and who will be stranded in poverty, ignorance, and ugly past. The history of the packaging industry also tells us that countries with advanced industrial design must have advanced packaging projects and developed packaging industries. To get rid of the shackles of traditional packaging, achieve modernization of packaging, improve the market competitiveness of products, and accelerate the internationalization and modernization of products, we must first revitalize industrial designs.

1 Definition of Industrial Design

In 980, the International Industrial Design Association defined industrial design as follows: For mass-produced industrial products, materials, structures, forms, colors, surface finishes, and decorations were given in terms of training, technical knowledge, experience, and visual experience. The new quality and qualifications are called industrial designs. When industrial designers pay their own technical knowledge and experience and visual evaluation capabilities for the solution of packaging, promotion, display, market development and other issues, they also belong to the category of industrial design.

From this definition, we can understand the intrinsic characteristics of industrial design and the intrinsic links with packaging engineering from the following aspects.

1.1 Preconditions for industrial design

Industrial design is a specific design activity in the large-scale industrial production process of the machine. It is different from the traditional single-piece handicraft product design, but is based on the premise of mechanical mass production. Although human beings have a long history of packaging activities, the time for truly forming a packaging industry is very short. Modern packaging engineering has high technical content, involves many disciplines, and has a large production volume. It has not been completed by previous individual workshops. It not only contains packaging design, packaging materials and containers, but also contains the unification of packaging technology and art; packaging and The harmonious unity of consumers' visual experience must meet the requirements of ergonomics. Modern packaging engineering represents the mechanized production of packaged products.

1. 2 Industrial design is an innovative activity

Industrial design is a creative activity for the prediction and planning of industrial products. It includes general civilian industrial products as well as high-tech products such as national defense and aerospace; it includes both general industrial products and machine tools for industrial products; it includes construction and environmental design, as well as packaging, signs, and commercial advertising. Graphic design, as small as a button, a paper clip, as large as 10,000 tons of wheel, astronaut cabin, etc. are all within the scope of industrial design. The industrial design of packaged product design and its protection, promotion, beautification, convenience and other functions of the planning and innovation will have a far-reaching impact on the market competitiveness of the product.

1 . 3 Industrial design focuses on product design

Industrial design includes environmental and architectural design, visual communication design, and product design. Among them, product design is the core of industrial design. Packaging is also a product. Packaging design also belongs to the category of product design, but it is not only limited to product design, but also includes environmental and visual communication design. Because packaging science is an applied basic science involving multiple disciplines, only packaging science can not directly guide the packaging industry to practice packaging, but also requires some engineering disciplines to guide the packaging industry. Therefore, in a sense, packaging product design is a kind of industrial design that involves many disciplines, many factors of engineering theory, and human and machine humanities and other social environmental factors.

1.4 Industrial design is the perfect combination of engineering design and industrial art design

Industrial design is the close integration of product constituent elements and their inherent combination of engineering technology design and product modeling and their external forms of industrial art design. Packaging design must also follow the industrial design of this property and to maximize the realization of the function of the product and the function of the package itself. Industrial design is not only different from arts and crafts design, but also different from engineering technology design. The packaging design under the guidance of the industrial design principle can truly realize the perfect combination of the protection function, promotion function, beautification function and convenience function of the packaging. The kind of packaging that varies in surface color decoration has very little design progress in terms of usage, basic functions, and structure, that is, factors related to people's use, such as the lack of design in ergonomic quality. Packaging products often have a direct impact on their commercial promotion value because they are not easy to use or have poor appearance. This has nothing to do with product design without the participation of industrial designers or engineering designers without industrial design training. Industrial design is not only distinguished from traditional arts and crafts design by mechanized mass production, but also distinguished from engineering design by its “core” service. Industrial design is the relationship between "people and things". It is the use of science and technology to create the things people need for life and work.
